SY-CATOX is a new type of water treatment filter medium with high-purity manganese dioxide (MnO₂) coated on the surface of zeolite filter media. SY-CATOX can not only remove iron and manganese from water, but also deliver strong removal performance against arsenic, hydrogen sulfide, heavy metals and radionuclides. In addition, it can filter particles as small as 3 μm.

SY-CATOX Catalytic Filtration Media Removal of Iron & Manganese
Mechanism of Action
SY-CATOX is a catalytic filter medium coated with high-purity γ-MnO₂. When in contact with water, it generates hydroxyl radicals (OH·), which facilitate the formation of metal flocs from dissolved iron, manganese and divalent heavy metal ions.
With a high specific surface area and unique macroporous structure, SY-CATOX captures contaminants via adsorption and filtration. It removes iron, manganese, hydrogen sulfide and heavy metals, and easily filters iron and manganese oxides produced after aeration.

Chemical Oxidation and pH
When the oxidation-reduction potential of water is insufficient, trace oxidants such as Cl₂, KMnO₄, H₂O₂ and NaClO can be dosed to support catalytic oxidation.
Dissolved oxygen (DO) effectively oxidizes Fe(Ⅱ) and As(Ⅲ). However, DO alone is inadequate if iron exists as organic complexes. Iron oxidation proceeds slowly at pH below 7.0; pH adjustment combined with oxidants is recommended for pre-oxidation. Chemical oxidation is generally required for simultaneous iron and manganese removal in a single filtration stage.
SY-CATOX only requires minimal oxidant dosage for thorough iron and manganese removal. It also delivers efficient heavy metal removal, meeting strict drinking water quality standards.
Optimal pH range for pollutant removal:
1. Iron (Fe): 7.5–7.8
2. Manganese (Mn): 8.0–8.5
3. Arsenic (As): 7.5–7.8
4. Heavy metals (Pb, Ni, Zn, Sb, Tl, Al, Cu, Cd, Hg, etc.): 8.0–8.5
5. Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S): 8.0–8.5
Arsenic Removal
When iron and arsenic coexist in water, iron ions hydrolyze to produce ferric hydroxide which adsorbs arsenic for co-precipitation. Tests and practical cases prove that the optimal arsenic removal effect is achieved when the molar ratio of Fe/As in water is at least 20:1.
Arsenic exists in water in two forms: trivalent arsenic As(Ⅲ) and pentavalent arsenic As(Ⅴ). The filter medium performs better in removing As(Ⅴ), so oxidant pre-oxidation is essential to convert As(Ⅲ) into As(Ⅴ) and boost flocculation and co-precipitation of iron and arsenic.
For daily maintenance, backwashing shall be carried out when the pressure difference of filter bed exceeds 0.06 MPa to wash off flocs on the medium surface, followed by 2–5 minutes of forward rinsing to clean SY-CATOX thoroughly.
